Welcome

The Smart Farming Guide promotes NFYFC’s aims of advancing education and knowledge of agriculture and rural issues. Collaborating with industry and Defra, this user-friendly guide helps all YFC members with their activities, study and career ambitions.

Charlotte Smith, NFYFC President

"This is most definitely a legacy project and a great future asset for all YFC members."

Welcome from Clive Beer MRICS MCIArb TEP, Head of Savills UK Rural Professional Services, Accredited Mediator

The framework within which UK agriculture operates is about to undergo the biggest change since the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. During the next few years our trading platforms and subsidies will change and we have to hope that these negotiations and outcomes put UK agriculture in a strong position for the future.

You, the next generation of farmers, producers and growers will be operating in this post EU landscape. It will be extremely important for you to have access to as much relevant information and market intelligence to help shape your business strategies and decision-making to your best advantage.

As ever, Savills is pleased to support NFYFC – if we can help you at all please do contact Savills.

Welcome from Doug Jackson

As a former YFC member and AGRI Chairman, I am delighted to have been a part of this project.  Within this guide there are two key parts – the first is a guide to running a YFC Business Development Competition and the second a guide to setting up and running a business.  Within the guide there are lots of links to other resources that may help you.

Farming is a network - there are many people who will be more than happy to help you if you want to set up your own business or even grow an existing business - just ask.

Planning (your competition or business) is vital - if you have a plan you (a) know what you intend to do so you can monitor your progress but (b) probably more importantly, things will change and with a clear plan you will be able to react quickly to these changes and still deliver success.

In this website you will find guidance on:

  • Running a business development competition
  • Setting up your business
  • Writing a business plan
  • Financing your business
  • Growing your business
  • Protecting your business

Enjoy using the Smart Farming Guide!
